Introduction

Pwani for Peace (P4P) is a registered community support and development organization based in Mombasa. It is an initiative of local professionals, business people, religious leaders, women and youth leaders. The organization is non political and non profit making.

The conflicts that followed the December 2007 general elections generated great animosity and suspicion among communities who reside in this region. The resultant resentments and misgivings have made life difficult within neighborhoods that had hitherto co-existed peacefully. In numerous instances, neighbors have opted to part company and relocated to areas adjacent to “their people”. The situation if left unattended could degenerate to a wide scale community conflict with far reaching consequences.

P4P was purposely initiated to address pertinent community issues to ensure peaceful and harmonious co-existence among the different Pwani communities. As you are already aware, the coastal region of Kenya is home to almost all the tribes of Kenya not to mention the numerous global visitors and holiday makers who frequent this region seasonally. It is therefore imperative that concerted efforts are made to support all initiatives that promote peace and community cohesiveness to ensure sustainable socio-economic development in this region.
